How to prevent moulds in your
wine cellar? Well, moulds are one of the biggest threats in cellars,
especially underground wine cellars. Having a mouldy cellar means
your collection is in danger. How? Well, moulds may not enter your wine
bottles, but they will ruin the labels of the bottles. And thus, you cannot
identify the age, ingredients, and origin of wines. As a result, you may end up
storing your wines wrongfully and mess up their aging. Besides, moulds can also
damage the display of your wine collection and make your cellar look like a
century-old cave. But using a few steps, you can get rid of this. And we will
talk about that in the below blog post.
How to prevent moulds in your
basement wine cellar?
Most people choose the basement
to install their in-house wine cellars. With a naturally cool and dark
environment, the basement creates the ideal wine-storing condition. Between the
low light and high humidity, the basement is one of the ideal places for
storing wines. Well, it is the perfect environment for moulds as well. Hence,
most underground cellars develop moulds after months or years. But you can
prevent that with the following tips:
1. Keep the humidity level of your basement
wine cellar between 70% to 80%. This level is a must to keep the corks
moist. But if the humidity level of the cellar exceeds 80%, it may lead to
the build-up of moulds and mildews. Hence, you should install a
dehumidifier in your cellar. So that it can soak up the excess humidity
from your cellar and keep it ideal.
2. Check frequently if there is any water
leakage in your wine cellar. If there is water stored in your cellar, it
will invite moulds into your wine storage. Check around every corner of
your cellar and make sure that there is no water leakage or drops. If
there are any, ensure to clean that up as soon as possible.
How to clean up moulds from the
basement cellar?
But what will you do if the
underground wine storage gets mouldy? Well, instead of being worried about the
moulds, you should clean it up before it ruins your wine labels. And here are
some tips that you can try:
1. Take half a cup of vinegar and add one
quart of water to it. Mix the solution well and wipe your wine bottles
with this. Since vinegar is a mild acid, it can kill moulds.
2. Take 3% strength undiluted Hydrogen
Peroxide (H2O2) solution and apply it directly to
your bottles. Leave the solution like this for at least 10-15 minutes and
allow it to saturate. Once done, scrub the bottles to take the solution
off them. Peroxide releases Oxygen (O2) at a faster rate that
oxidises and decomposes the mould surface.
3. But what if the moulds are too stubborn
to clean? Well, in that case, you can add half a cup of vinegar directly
to one quart of Hydrogen Peroxide and follow the previous step.
Cannot decide on how to keep
moulds away from in-house underground
wine cellars? Well, you can follow certain tips to maintain your
basement cellar and make it free from moulds. And we hope this blog post can
help you with that.
